Guangyao (Sam) Wang Joins UCCE and DREC!
As of May 13, 2013, Guangyao (Sam) Wang became the Vegetable Specialist and Director at UC Desert Research Center. His Research and Extension Program will focus on cultural practice, nutrient management, and crop rotation for vegetable crops in desert production systems.
Wang received his Ph.D. in plant biology at UC Riverside in 2005. His dissertation research focused on competition of cowpea cover crop and weeds. During his Ph.D. study, he also worked on cover cropping and crop rotation in vegetable crops at Coachella Valley Agricultural Research Center. Wang did post-doctoral research on vegetable production at Michigan State University from 2005 to 2007.
Wang has been an Extension Specialist at the University of Arizona's Maricopa Agricultural Center since 2008, specializing in crop production, crop rotation and development of new crops. Prior to moving to the USA, Wang worked at Beijing Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences as a research and extension scientist in crop protection and weed biology.
In addition to his Ph.D., Wang holds a B.S. in crop science from Shanxi Agricultural University (China), and M.S. in botany from China Agricultural University, and an M. S. in applied statistics from UC Riverside.

Patricia Burich-McNeece joins Cooperative Extension!
Imperial County's Cooperative Extension office recently hired a new Office Supervisor II. Trish Burich-McNeece joined the staff on June 3, 2013. Burich-McNeece is a graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism. In 1981 she moved to the Imperial Valley to take a job in television news where she worked as news director, anchor, reporter and producer for five years. For the next 24 years, she worked as the Blood Drive Coordinator for both El Centro Regional Medical Center and Pioneers Memorial Hospital. In that capacity, she was responsible for scheduling blood and bone marrow drives throughout Imperial County, executing all marketing and public relations functions as well as providing donor awareness and educational programs to businesses, schools, government agencies and service clubs. Her last job, prior to coming to the Cooperative Extension office, was as the Director of Programs for the El Centro Chamber of Commerce where she planned all of the Chamber's special events, including the annual Christmas Parade, Snowbird Breakfast, Air Show Gala and Annual Dinner.
